HOW I WORK WITH YOGA

WHY LEARN THE ART OF YOGA ONE-TO-ONE?
We are all different, we are all unique. As so with Yoga, what works for one person at one point in time, won’t necessarily work for another in the same way.

This view respects the origins of Yoga as it was historically taught to adults, via a personally relevant transmission. It is also the meaning of the word Viniyoga, such as in the phrase the Viniyoga of Yoga, as in the specialised placement of Yoga linked to the needs of the individual at any given time or stage in life.

Here, this means that there are no ‘styles’ of Yoga. There is just Yoga as it applies to you. Relevant to your life, as it is now and as it can be. In other words, Yoga for you becomes your Yoga.

As an ageless ally, a personal Yoga practice and lifestyle guidance can nourish, support and inspire you, both during the day-to-day and for the longer journey.

Key benefits to this unique process include:

How one-to-one Lessons
are tailored according to your personal needs with scope to explore, cultivate and sustain a Yoga practice that is uniquely yours.

That all are welcome at any age or situation,
with no need for previous knowledge of, or experience with, Yoga.

Why learning one-to-one can offer
learning goals that are realistic and achievable, within which you can appreciate a measurable, tangible progress.

That we meet within time-appropriate
intervals to review, refine and develop your Yoga practice and reflections at a pace and potential that suits us both.

The regularity of bespoke lessons
allowing us to fine-tune your Yoga practice as your life circumstances, events and interests change. Building on this connection can support you better than the more generalised dynamic of weekly or drop-in group classes.

A flexibility of meeting points and times
that can be  in-person at my home studio; or else they can be a mix of in-person and online, or even entirely online.

The benefits of in-person learning
means that whether live or online, the in-person connection via my home studio can afford a depth of personalised and targeted support that cannot be replicated by accessing group classes or pre-recorded online lessons.

A live or online home studio lesson
presents an opportunity for both of us to  identify, encounter, explore and investigate challenges and  possibilities as they arise, moment to moment.

Suggested frameworks for Live or Online Meetings are:

An Initial Free 30 mins Creative Connection
Here we can meet for a in-person chat, either live or online, and explore the potentials around working together. There is no obligation on either side, the conversation is exploratory. I hear your questions around Yoga and listen to your needs, goals, interests. You get a sense of my ways of working, timings, costings.

From there, either at this meeting or after time to mull
If you are wanting to have personal lessons we can set up an initial framework around working together as outlined below:

1. 90 mins Collaborative Consultation and Initial Practice
Our first meeting, either in-person or online, includes a 360” snapshot of your current circumstances: mental & physical health, food and sleep patterns, your home and work life situation. We will consider how you could best integrate a practice into your day.

From this, I propose and design an initial home practice for you. You will be guided through an outline of its form.  I talk you through learning the form of the practice . Finally, you get a drawn design of your personalised practice to take away for home guidance.

2. 30 mins Online Check-In. For Reflective Discussion and Practice Review
The next meeting, usually around two weeks later and more usually online,  is a shorter review follow-up. This offers a point of connection and an update where you can ask pressing questions and relate recent occurrences or changes. Once more we look to review, refine or adjust your practice according to your experiences so far.

3. 60 mins Linking through Learning: how to Develop Next Steps
Our third meeting, either in-person or online, is usually around two to three weeks later and is a longer session, affording both review and development. It will be a guided lesson, in which we look at how things are going and what has changed for you. We again work through the form of your current practice.

We address your questions, discoveries, doubts and insights as they arise and we amend or develop your practice according to your responses. We might chat around how your home Yoga practice sits within your life, and how your Yoga can influence your surroundings.

4. 30 minutes Reflective Discussion and Practice Review
Our fourth meeting, usually around two to three weeks later and more usually on-line, offers a point of connection and an update where you can ask pressing questions and relate recent occurrences or changes. Once more we look to review, refine or adjust your practice according to your experiences so far.

5. 60 mins Linking through Learning: how to Develop Next Steps
Our fifth meeting either in-person or online, usually around two to three weeks later, will again be a longer lesson allowing both review and development.  Again, we look at how things are going and what has changed for you. We again review the form of your current practice. Again exploring any questions, discoveries, doubts and insights; and we further refine your practice according to your needs and experience.

6. 30 minutes Reflective Discussion and Practice Review
Our sixth meeting, usually after a two to three week interval again more usually online, offers a point of connection where you can relate your recent experiences around establishing a home Yoga practice. Once more we look to review and refine as well as shaping your practice so as to be a friend for life.

What does this Initial Six Meeting process involve in terms of Fees?
This package with its initial 90′ consultation and initial bespoke practice setup, along with a further two 60′ lessons interspersed with three 30′ review lessons, all usually around or within a three month timespan is £220. The fee is payable on commencement of the programme as either a single, or as a split payment.

Follow-on or Follow-up meeting options Include
A follow-on package, either in-person or online, of three 60′ development meetings interspersed with three 30′ review meetings, over a period of four to six months is offered at £190. The fee is payable on commencement of the programme as either a single, or as a split payment.

Alternately, one off or individual follow-up meetings either in-person or online, can be arranged, according to your needs or priorities and relevant to your Yoga Practice, at a fee of £44 for a 60′ development meeting, or £22 for a 30′ review meeting. All payable around the time of the meeting.

From here, options to take Yoga further, either as a Deepening Practice, a Profound Psychology, or a Lifestyle Guide can be explored …

YOGA MEANS MANY THINGS

WITHIN THIS MODERN ERA,
there increasingly appears to be more and more confusion around what Yoga is, or even what it isn’t.

Within this plethora of ancient and modern approaches, an authentic Yoga Practice and Yoga Study can be seen as embracing three interwoven threads:

1. Yoga as a means for Self-Empowerment

For example, Yoga can be seen as a means of Self-Empowerment. Here, Yoga can be used to empower the body and the mind. It is the ability to achieve something through physical and mental effort. For instance, to cultivate and maintain a state of attention, or to develop the body and the breath through the refinement of specific Yoga postures and breathing techniques. The consequences are power over and within the body, mind and mood.

2. Yoga as a means for Self-Inquiry

Though, traditionally this aspect of Self-Enpowerment is only a means towards a more important goal. Namely, that of Yoga as a means of Self-Inquiry. Here, Yoga can be utilised as a meditative tool to cultivate a deeper understanding of ourselves by inquiring both into and beyond what we view as the everyday self, its actions and its motives.

With a more sensitive and consistent attention we can lessen the effects of our social conditionings. As a consequence, we can experience a deeper sense of being and from it, a potential for action with greater awareness within our life, work and relationships.

3. Yoga as a means for Self-Healing

Yet, we all experience problems, poor health or illness from time to time. Here, Yoga can be utilised  as a means of restorative recovery and preventative healthcare, it can be a tool in a therapeutic process to help us both change and even anticipate the effects of personal problems and illness in our lives.

Here, the approach must be different for each person as our potential to practice Yoga will be affected by the problem, or the problem by our attitude towards working with it. Practising Yoga as a means of therapeutic healthcare also presumes that we are willing to accept responsibility for making changes within our own situation.

“True liberty is what relationship you have with your habits.”
– T Krishnamacharya

These three aspects of Yoga Practice and Yoga Study, as self-empowerment, self-inquiry, or self-healing, are mutually supportive in helping to sustain physiological vitality, enhance psychological clarity and support spiritual purpose within the commitment and challenges of our life, work and relationships.

However, our Starting Point is as important as our Goal

Whether your needs are at the level of Body, Breath, Energy, Mind or Mood, the specific application of Yoga as in Viniyoga, enables you to define your unique starting point or personal square one.

“Yoga is a mystery…

it does not mean the same thing to each and everyone. In spite of the vast field it covers, hardly anyone is able to define it in simple terms.

Where is then, the hope of experiencing its true significance? Like everything, Yoga must be presented intelligently. It should be spoken of carefully and offered according to the aspiration, requirement and the culture of the individual.

This should be done in stages. Systematic application of Yoga – be it concerned with physical exercises, deep breathing, relaxation, meditation, lifestyle, food, studies – is the need of the day.

This is what the word Viniyoga represents.”
– TKV Desikachar

From your unique starting point we determine both the map for your journey and the direction of travel. This then influences the choice of appropriate means and developmental tools with which we gradually build your personalised full spectrum Yoga practice.

So, Viniyoga begins:
by asking a question rather than offering a ready-made answer.

We speak to the person first, by asking:
– What is it that you want from learning or using Yoga…?
– Is it to recover from illness or a difficult period in your life?
– Or to support yourself so that you can sustain a sense of vitality as you move from one day to the next?
– Or even to rediscover a self purpose, clarity and power?

As a comprehensive full-spectrum toolkit:
Viniyoga is both a healing and a learning process that evolves from an inquiry into our limitations towards one that extends our potentials.

Via:
A simple, regular, practice initially lasting around 25 minutes that you can attend to, care for and nurture. One that both serves and sustains you, whilst accommodating the inevitable obstacles that you may encounter along the way…

Utilising:
– Āsana or Bodywork as Movement or Stillness
– Prāṇāyāma or Breathing as Relaxation or Attention
– Dhyāna or Meditation as Mental Focus or Transcendence
– Yoga Studies or Psychology as Reflection or Discovery
– Āyurveda or Lifestyle as Self Care or Self Support

The Power in Yoga becomes Your Power:
For many who chose this Simple yet Subtle, Pared down yet Precise, Accumulative yet Accessible approach, it can feel personally liberating. Plus, you are increasingly freed from needing to rely on led Yoga classes, or specific Yoga styles, or generalised Yoga routines, whether in speciality studios, gyms, community centres or online.

“Emma, I had an amazing practice today.
I read your notes and with the practice today everything seemed to fall into place.  My breaths were consistently 6 seconds in and 8 out.  I focused on my whole body being connected as one.  You know, I would never go back to doing yoga in group classes at my local gym…
I finally have the confidence and skills to practice on my own.
I am just so very appreciative and cannot express how important it is to have your teaching as part of my life.”
Allen, U.S.A.

MY PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

WHO IS EMMA?
How I came to work with People and Yoga.

Starting from my twenties I left Cambridge University with a BAHons in Modern Languages, which included a year living and teaching for the British Council in Chile, followed by an MA from UCL in History of Art. From these foundations, I enjoyed a twenty-year career in the Visual Arts. Initially as a Specialist for a premier London Auction House, then as a Manager for a central London Art gallery and subsequently, over a span of eight years, as a Curator for a Global Corporate Art Collection.

The work was stimulating and diverse, involving extensive international travel. I was able to draw on my bilingual French-English roots, my facility for other languages and my ease for adapting to, and connecting with, people from different cultural backgrounds.

And yet my working world was changing. To one that was increasingly target-driven and geared to delivery rather than content, more about product than process. This seemed necessary on the one hand, and yet didn’t dovetail so well with my interest in working with Art and people on a more intimate level.

Within this, Yoga had already been a long-term personal pursuit and interest since my student days. It too, seemed to tap into something that felt more personal and more connective. So it seemed logical that I take the step of exploring professional training as a Yoga teacher as a means of engaging more directly with people.

Here, I completed a two year 300hr Accredited Yoga Training and in 2017 started offering group classes and individual lessons for a range of people in a variety of situations: Womens’ Refuges, Special Needs, Inner City Housing Developments, Elderly and Retirees, Gyms, etc.

I greatly enjoyed the process but I felt my skillset was still somewhat limited, and I continued to look for some deeper way to personalise and specialise my work with individuals.

It was early in 2019, that I came across the Viniyoga approach to practicing and teaching Yoga. Here was a method that both inspired and supported individuals within their stories. For the past seven years I have immersed myself in this approach, practicing and  studying one-to-one with a personal mentor Paul Harvey, who himself undertook over two decades of individual Yoga lessons in India with the influential TKV Desikachar.

It became apparent to me that the Viniyoga approach is especially appropriate in this modern age, where people are coming to Yoga within a wider range of social and cultural backgrounds and diverse needs, often requiring a more individualised approach. People need to feel personally met, wherever and at whatever point in life they find themselves.

In 2023,  as part of my commitment to Continuing Professional Development, I completed two years’ of trainings focused on person-centered counselling skills. This experience enhances and supports my primary work with Yoga with individuals to help identify personal needs and develop appropriate lifestyle strategies. Aside from continuing these personal and professional studies, I receive ongoing personal supervision for all my clients and students.

I now find myself learning and teaching Yoga solely in the way I was privileged to learn, through the exclusivity and uniqueness of one-to-one lessons, within all aspects of my practice, studies and teaching skills.

Within each personal meeting, whether with a new, prospective learner or an existing, well-established practitioner, I continue to be inspired by the breadth and depth of this nuanced and meticulous approach to Yoga.

The one-to-one Yoga relationship is a powerful container and a vehicle, and it’s a privilege to be able to work with people in this way.

Coming to this day in 2026, I am currently based in the Cotswolds, near Stroud. Though, thanks to online developments, my work with Yoga in one-to-one situations has extended beyond the physical limitations of location, distance and timezones. Now I find myself outreaching to individuals as far afield as America and Europe, whether working in English, French, Spanish or Italian.
